An ecosystem can be conceived as a set of interactive subsystems. It is in fact built up from the basic components, the individual living systems – also called organisms –  via subsystems to the highest level. Organisms as such are built up from cells, tissues, organs and organ complexes.

We start with the basic components/organisms plants, animals and humans. From here we built up the city ecosystem as follows: citizen/animal/plant – community/ organisation – unit – mosaic – city. The city itself is a subsystem of the system region, which is part of the system province, which is part of the system country et cetera. These levels will be involved when relevant. Every level in the system can be described according to criteria of architecture, population and production.

The origin of the concept codex can actually be found in the forest. It is derived from the Latin caudex meaning “trunk of a tree”. The trunk is where two worlds meet in the binding principles of life, that of ‘above ground’ and that of ‘under ground’. The trunk is where all traffic from earth (upwards) and air (downwards) are combined in an ingenious transport system.

The GC Codex is in fact the set of building blocks used in the The City Ecosystem. These are explained and described separately.
